    Your 4-Day Adventure

    Day 01 - Darwin & Katherine

Your journey begins in Darwin, where you’ll be welcomed at the rail terminal with light refreshments, barista coffee and sparkling wine. Take a moment to photograph The Ghan’s iconic red locomotive before stepping aboard your home for the next four days. Settle into your cabin, explore the elegant dining and lounge spaces, or meet fellow travellers in the Outback Explorer Lounge as the train begins its southbound journey into Australia’s vast interior. A chef-prepared lunch showcases regionally inspired flavours, setting the tone for the all-inclusive experience ahead.

By afternoon, The Ghan arrives in Katherine for your first Off Train Experience. Choose to cruise through the towering sandstone cliffs of Nitmiluk Gorge, where ancient rock formations and rich Indigenous heritage tell stories thousands of years old. Alternatively, immerse yourself in authentic outback life at the Katherine Outback Experience or venture into the limestone chambers of Cutta Cutta Caves. For a truly unforgettable perspective, an optional helicopter flight reveals the immense scale and raw beauty of this remarkable region from above. Return to the train for a relaxed evening dinner as the journey continues south.

Day 2 - Alice Springs & The Red Centre

Wake to endless horizons and the warm hues of the desert as The Ghan approaches the legendary town of Alice Springs. After a hearty breakfast on board, step into the heart of Central Australia with a choice of immersive Off Train Experiences. Explore the town’s history on the A Town Called Alice tour, cycle through rugged landscapes on an off-road e-bike adventure, or journey to Standley Chasm and Simpsons Gap where sheer rock walls glow red beneath the desert sun. Wildlife enthusiasts can visit the Alice Springs Desert Park, while those seeking a once-in-a-lifetime experience may opt for a scenic flight over Uluru and Kata Tjuta.

As evening falls, prepare for one of the most memorable moments of the expedition. At the historic Alice Springs Telegraph Station, dine beneath a canopy of stars in the heart of the outback. Surrounded by red earth and wide-open skies, enjoy fine cuisine, premium wines and live entertainment in an atmosphere that feels both intimate and extraordinary. It is a signature Ghan experience and a highlight of the journey through Australia’s interior.

    Day 3 - Manguri & Coober Pedy

Today begins with a magical sunrise stop at the remote outpost of Manguri. Step off the train into the quiet stillness of the desert and watch as the first light paints the landscape in soft pinks and golds. It is a peaceful and powerful moment that captures the essence of the outback. From here, the journey continues to the extraordinary town of Coober Pedy, known as the opal capital of the world and famous for its underground way of life.

In Coober Pedy, explore a community unlike any other. Visit the striking Breakaways, where layered rock formations create a dramatic lunar-like landscape, or learn about the fascinating history of opal mining at the Opal Experience. A highlight of the day is a gourmet lunch served underground, a uniquely Australian dining experience that reflects the town’s character and resilience. For sweeping aerial views of the Painted Hills or Lake Eyre, optional scenic flights offer yet another breathtaking perspective. Back on board for your final evening, enjoy dinner in the dining carriage before sharing stories and a nightcap as The Ghan makes its way towards Adelaide.

Day 4 - Adelaide & The Flinders Ranges

As morning light filters through your cabin window, you’ll notice the landscape beginning to change. The deep ochre tones of the outback gradually give way to rolling hills and green fields as The Ghan passes through the majestic Flinders Ranges. Enjoy a leisurely brunch on board, reflecting on the extraordinary scenery, connections and experiences that have defined the journey over the past four days.

Arriving in Adelaide, you’ll step off the train with more than just photographs. You’ll carry memories of ancient gorges, desert sunsets, shared laughter under the stars and the unique rhythm of life aboard one of the world’s great rail journeys. The Ghan Expedition is not simply transport between two cities — it is an unforgettable exploration through the heart of Australia.
